Your child should use a forward-facing car seat with a harness as long as feasible, up until they reach the height and weight restriction, once they outgrow the need for a rear-facing car seat. When purchasing a car seat for a child who has outgrown a rear-facing seat, keep the following alternatives in mind:

Only a forward-facing car seat
Many car seats that solely face forward can hold kids up to 65 pounds or more. Always check your car seat’s official handbook for the maximum height and weight restrictions! Not every car seat falls within the umbrella of these suggestions.

A combination car seat
Up until the child weighs between 40 and 65 pounds, it operates with a harness. A belt-positioning booster can then be used for children up to 80 to 100 pounds with your car’s lap or shoulder belt after the harness has been removed.

Car Seats for Young Children
Your preschooler should switch to a belt-positioning booster with a lap/shoulder belt in the car once they outgrow the criteria for a forward-facing car seat with a harness. In general, children need booster seats from about the age of three or four to at least eight. This kind of car seat accommodates children up to 80 to 100 pounds.

A high-back booster should be used if the car’s backseat is low since kids need head support. If the automobile seat has a headrest, a backless booster can be employed.
